Careers
Our careers programme is an important element of our offering to SuMS students.
An outline of the careers education, information, advice and guidance available to students at SuMS can be found in the SuMS Careers Policy. Our Careers and Progressions Timeline provides a summary of the key activities and opportunities students can expect during their time at Surrey Maths School.
Our Careers Lead is Daniel Robles Llana and you can email him on droblesllana@surreymathsschool.co.uk.

Our vision
The world of education and work is changing rapidly, and deciding what to do next can sometimes feel challenging. At SuMS, we want every student to explore a wide range of possibilities, understand where their interests and strengths might lead, and make informed, ambitious choices about their future.
We recognise that career plans develop over time. Our aim is therefore not simply to prepare students for a single destination, but to develop the transferable skills, knowledge and confidence they will need to navigate future study, training and employment throughout their lives.
Our curriculum and careers programme supports this ambition. Working with universities, employers and other partners, we introduce students to pathways in mathematics, science, technology, engineering and beyond, while also highlighting the breadth of careers in which mathematical thinking is valued. We encourage every SuMS student to explore widely, aim high and take purposeful first steps towards a future that interests and motivates them.
Unifrog
All SuMS students and their parents or carers have access to Unifrog, an online platform bringing together information and guidance about university, apprenticeships and other post-school options.
Unifrog includes up-to-date labour market information across a wide range of career profiles (the Careers Library), subject guides for university study (the Subjects Library), tools for researching UK universities and courses (the UK Universities tool), and information about current apprenticeship opportunities (the Apprenticeship tool). Students can use these resources to compare pathways, investigate entry requirements and understand where different choices might lead.
These are only some of the resources available through Unifrog. Throughout their time at SuMS, students are supported to use the platform effectively as part of their wider careers and progression planning.
For students
There are many routes available after SuMS. We encourage you to explore them early, compare different possibilities and make choices that reflect your interests, strengths and longer-term ambitions.
University
Applications to UK universities are made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The following resources can help you research courses, institutions, entry requirements and open days:
- ucas.com - a thorough and up-to-date guide to university admissions
- university.which.co.uk - a guide to universities – includes a useful budget calculator
- thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk - a guide to universities that shows ranking by student satisfaction and graduate prospects
- opendays.com - a calendar of university open days
- university.springpod.com - explore subjects and universities
Higher and Degree Apprenticeships
Higher and degree apprenticeships combine paid employment with structured study, and some programmes lead to a full undergraduate or master’s degree. They can provide an excellent route into sectors including engineering, technology, finance, data and other mathematically rich fields.
Applications are usually made directly to employers or training providers. You can apply for university courses through UCAS and for apprenticeships at the same time, allowing you to keep different pathways open while you consider your options.
Application windows vary between employers and from year to year, particularly during Year 13. SuMS will share relevant opportunities and students should also research proactively, monitor deadlines and engage directly with employers and providers.

For employers and partners
Strong links with employers help us to connect classroom learning with the world of work and give our students insight into the many ways mathematics is used beyond school. We welcome contributions from employers and professional partners through talks, workshops, workplace encounters, mentoring and work-experience opportunities. If you would like to work with SuMS and our students, please contact our Careers Lead.
