Governance

Surrey Maths School is governed by a local governing body, which is a committee of the board of trustees of Learning Partners Academy Trust, which has overall responsibility for governance of the school.

The committee comprises a group of volunteers who give their time and expertise freely to support the school by:

Area

What the LGB does

1. Strategic oversight

Understand the school's priorities and how they contribute to the MAT's strategy; scrutinise progress against the school's improvement priorities.

2. Holding leaders to account

Provide appropriate challenge to the headteacher/school leadership about performance, outcomes, safeguarding, attendance, behaviour, inclusion and quality of education.

3. Assurance

Give the trust board confidence that important systems are working effectively locally — particularly safeguarding, SEND, attendance, behaviour, health & safety and financial controls where delegated.

4. Local intelligence

Bring knowledge of the school, pupils, parents and community to the trust. An LGB should provide the MAT with information that may not be visible from central data.

5. Stakeholder voice

Ensure that the experiences and views of pupils, parents and the local/u-maths community inform governance and are appropriately fed upwards.

The specific responsibilities of the governing body are detailed within the trust’s scheme of delegation and Local Governing Body terms of reference.

Governors meet regularly twice a term, focusing their scrutiny and discussions against their annual work plan and visit the school regularly to understand, support and monitor school life. We follow government guidance and NGA (National Governance Association), are supported by the trust and adhere to a code of conduct in all that we do. For further information please see the contact details below.

Membership

Our Local Governing Body is based on a stakeholder model, with representatives of parents, staff, and the University of Surrey (our partner). Members are recruited for a three-to-four-year term on a skill set basis and/or through parental and staff election.

School Visits

Governors visit to understand the lived experience of the school, test and triangulate the information we receive from leaders, and strengthen our ability to provide informed challenge and assurance.

Governor Visits

Governor visits are an important part of effective governance. They enable governors to develop a first-hand understanding of the school, its students and its priorities, and to use this knowledge to provide informed challenge and assurance to school leaders and the Trust.

During visits, governors may:

  • develop their understanding of the school's context, strengths, priorities and areas for development;

  • gain insight into the experience of students, including their engagement, behaviour and participation in school life;

  • see how the school's strategic priorities and improvement plans are being put into practice;

  • consider the impact of the school's use of resources and budgets;

  • understand the condition, suitability and security of the school's buildings, facilities and grounds;

  • gather evidence which, alongside data, reports and stakeholder feedback, helps governors to triangulate information and ask informed questions;

  • contribute local knowledge and insight to the Local Governing Body and Trust; and

  • support the LGB and Trust Board in fulfilling their statutory and governance responsibilities.

Governor visits are not inspections. Governors do not evaluate individual members of staff, undertake formal lesson observations or become involved in the day-to-day management of the school. Their role is to understand the school, listen and ask questions, provide constructive challenge, and seek assurance that the school is being effectively led and that its priorities are making a positive difference for students.

Code of Conduct

As governors we follow the trust’s code of conduct.
